Movimiento antiglobalización vía Internet
La revista iWorld publicó hace unos años un artículo que hoy analizaremos, ya que muestra con claridad el gran aliado que es Internet para los movimientos sociales. En este caso, nos centraremos en el movimiento antiglobalización.
Como afirma el autor del artículo titulado “El movimiento antiglobalización se organiza también desde Internet“, la Red es uno de los principales aliados del movimiento antiglobalizador, y hay muchas organizaciones que convocan movilizaciones y publican información relativa al movimiento a través de Internet. Este hecho es posiblemente el que ha permitido que el movimiento tomara la importancia y el peso que tiene hoy en día, pues de no ser por la red de redes, puede que nunca se hubiera hecho sentir como se siente en la actualidad.
Numerosas asociaciones pacifistas y anti-globalización llevan convocando movilizaciones y protestas a través de Internet desde la Cumbre de Seattle del año 1999, y continuaron en Melbourne, Praga, Niza y Davos. Por ejemplo, durante la Cumbre de Quebec de 2001 se convocó una manifestación a través de la página Marcha de los pueblos, para protestar contra las medidas que se querían adoptar en la cumbre. El activismo a través de Internet es una de las armas de estos grupos para multiplicar la repercusión de sus posturas. Otro ejemplo es la organización Amigos de la Tierra de Europa, que agrupa a 31 entidades europeas que defienden el medioambiente, y que organizó una campaña de envío masivo de correo electrónico (spamming) a la Casa Blanca, como protesta por la negativa de George W. Bush a cumplir el protocolo de Kyoto sobre medio ambiente. Son más de diez años los que estas personas llevan luchando para lograr alguno de los objetivos que les mueven a idear numerosos actos en contra de las injusticias a las que el planeta se ve sometido. A veces consiguen que se les escuche y se modifiquen ciertas medidas adoptadas, pero otras veces tienen que vivir con la impotencia de sentirse ignorados y de no poder hacer nada más (al margen de las movilizaciones que planean de continuo).
Otra protesta de este tipo tuvo lugar cuando un grupo italiano bloqueó el site de la multinacional Fineco. La práctica se conoce con el nombre de netstrike y no supone ninguna ilegalidad, ya que consiste simplemente en un ingreso masivo, reiterado y simultáneo de usuarios a un determinado sitio web, hasta que los servidores no soporten la demanda y se vuelvan inoperantes. Esta práctica comenzó a utilizarse en 1995, para protestar contra las pruebas nucleares de Francia. La campaña italiana fue lanzada bajo el lema “Bloqueemos las autopistas de la globalización” en el sitio No Global (www.noglobal.org), uno de los sites más activos de la estrategia antiglobalización en Internet.
El movimiento antiglobalización utiliza Internet como instrumento de lucha, por ser el medio, precisamente, más global. Todos estos ejemplos muestran cómo los movimientos sociales germinan hoy en la Red, y que gracias a ella se pueden difundir por todo el mundo y hacer que cada día lleguen a más gente. Aunque los resultados no sean siempre los esperados, el movimiento antiglobalización puede presumir de ser uno de los movimientos en los que más gente se une para protestar contra las nefastas prácticas globalizadoras y contra los intereses ocultos que esconden aquellos que “deciden sobre el mundo globalizado”.
